How much are they paying you to stop chasing your dreams?

Firstly watch this. I feel It will set the tone for what I am about to say.

Lately I have found myself googling ‘ films about travel’ + ‘Films to evoke Wanderlust’ ( which I guess isn’t totally a surprise considering.. ) One film suggested to me was ‘Up and Away’ – In short its a George Clooney film where he travels around the USA, firing people from their jobs. As a film it is nowhere near the level of ‘Wild’ and ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’. It did however have one line which more than stood out to me. Yep – its the quote above.

Humans are sheep. We follow. We do what we think we should be doing. We follow the norms of society. However, society does not focus on the individual, society does not care about one’s personal dreams and ambitions. Society in fact crushes them. It takes away any individuality and pretty much just turns you into a number. The individual becomes part of a functioning network to create a stable community.
( side note: this is great if you don’t have the greatest ambition in life and all you wish to do is grow up, get a job, have a family and die. Which is guess, to some seems like a great ambition)

It is the more ambitious out there that ‘society ‘ really gets to. I believe that everyone has something that they really want to do/achieve in life. Many however become comfortable in a stable working environment. Years go by and the dreams they once had have long been forgotten.

I have a fair few friends who are in a similar position to me with family support blah blah. Several have come to me saying that they wish they could just get up and go like I do. I ask them why they don’t- their main response is : I can’t get that much time of work. I say ‘ well can’t you leave?’ But they can’t- because at 23 years old they are earning £30K a year and they have become comfortable. I earn around half of that amount. I don’t really know what I am doing in life but I am doing what the hell I want.

We fit into our place in society and we do very well there. But that place isn’t permanent. You don’t always have to be that person that fits into a particular slot. It is never too late to redefine yourself and in the words of George Eliot’It’s never too late to be what you might have been’.

People do things because they think that they have to – not because they want to. Humans are capable of anything and we should never give up on our dreams.

Sometimes we need a little reminder.
